In her first season as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar slayed, quipped and romanced her way into television history. After spending the season reluctantly embracing her duty as The Chosen One, Buffy faced her nemesis, The Master, and her prophesized death in the season finale, "Prophecy Girl." Dressed in a white prom dress but carrying a cross bow, Buffy entered the Master's lair intending to stop him from rising and opening the Hellmouth. She fails and The Master not only feeds on Buffy's blood, but he leaves her for dead, drowned in a pool of water. Xander resuscitates Buffy, and she awakens empowered and not a little angry at losing the battle. She returns to Sunnydale High where she again confronts The Master, dusts the ancient vamp and closes the Hellmouth. Together with Giles and her friends, Buffy successfully fought her darkest fear and triumphantly walked out alive to fight another day.
