Anubis, God of the Dead, is represented as a jackal-headed god or simply as a full jackal. Jackals are dog-like scavengers that wander through the arid regions, perpetually in search of meal opportunities. Anubis presided over embalmings, and after the funeral he would lead the deceased into the presence of the judges where his soul would be judged. Anubis was the guardian of offerings brought to the ceremony and also guarded the mummy from evil forces in the night. Jackals were known to wander the Necropolis (city of the dead) at night, thus giving birth to the origin of Anubis, God of the Dead. The name "Anubis" is the Greek rendering of the Egyptian "Anpu."
