We Do Love Our Sports, Don't We?

Sport (British English) or sports (American English) includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which through casual or organized participation aim to use, maintain, or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants and in some cases, entertainment for spectators. Hundreds of sports exist, from those like tennis or the WWE between single contestants through those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals.

Does It Have to Be Physical?

In general, these are recognized as a system of activities based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity, with the largest major competitions such as the National Football League's (NFL's) Super Bowl or the Olympic Games admitting only teams or activities meeting this definition, and other organizations like the Council of Europe using definitions precluding from classification those activities without a physical element. In the United States, included would be professional soccer and volleyball, various amateur and collegiate competitions, Major League Baseball (MLB), and other professional organizations.

However, a number of competitive but non-physical activities also claim recognition as "mind sports." The International Olympic Committee (IOC) through ARISF recognizes both chess and bridge as bona fide, and SportAccord, the international federation association, recognizes five non-physical contests: bridge, chess, draughts (checkers), Go, and xiangqi. The way some players handle their Nerf blaster, maybe that should qualify as well!

There Are Rules, Too

Oh yeah, competitions are usually governed by a set of rules or customs intended to ensure fair competition and allow consistent adjudication of the winner. Winning can be determined by physical events such as scoring goals as in the National Hockey League (NHL) or crossing a line first as in a footrace. They can also be determined by judges who are scoring elements of the performance, including objective or subjective measures like technical performance or artistic impression. This is evident in gymnastics and figure skating, for example.
