The success of the German Panzer Divisions in WWII was not achieved by tanks alone. Rather it was the ability to combine the elements of Infantry, Armor and Artillery. The Grenadiers were an integral part of that strategy as they provided close support for the tanks. There were two distinct types of Panzer Grenadiers Battalions, the Mechanized unit which fought from armored halftracks and the Motorized unit which was carried in lorries and filed cars. Each had similar characteristics, but their combat potential was notably different.
