World War I, 1914-1918, the Great War: The shot that killed Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was the match thrown into the gasoline of rising nationalist tensions worldwide, igniting an explosion that was to be forever know as 'The Great War.' It was the greatest destruction the world had ever seen and it would be repeated again in the Second World War before the nations of the world saw the folly of such massive conflict. Trapped in the violent tides of political design were the men who fought it. They were men of all walks of life and nearly every nation on earth that were thrown unaware into the mud and barbed wire strewn battle fields of First World War. Added to the list of horrors that faced them in this conflict were the Machine Gun, Hand Grenades, Flamethrowers and Poison Gas. Within the trenches the soldiers lived and died, all the while asking the question, "why," all waiting for that fateful moment when the whistles would blow and a human mass of courage and fear would charge into no-mans-land to win the day, or perish in the madness of it all.
