The Zouave uniform was originally an Algerian military fashion adapted by the French army. It was very much in Vogue during the American Civil War and was copied in a number of variations. The 146th NY regiment came into existence later in the war and was comprised of a number of veteran Zouave troops from the famous 5th Ny regt. The regiment proved itself at the bloody Battle of the Wilderness.
