The success of a mission often depends on being able to operate under the cover of darkness. The ability to attack at night can provide the element of surprise when confronting enemy troops disrupting supply lines, and assaulting fortifications that are impenetrable in daylight. The unit that can perform well in darkness certainly has the military advantage. A number of new technologies have been developed to provide American soldiers with the ability to pierce the darkness and capture that advantage. When Air Force personnel are engaged in ground combat, night vision equipment is often mounted on their weapons. One of the more effective devices for Night Ops takes the form of an image intensifying rifle scope. The NVS-700 "Starlight Scope" weighs only 1.814 kilograms and is small enough to be affixed to a number of weapons, most notably the 5.56 caliber M-16 rifle. The Starlight Scope intensifies the images of targets that are totally shrouded in darkness, allowing combat Airmen to strike when the enemy least expects it. Air Force personnel also rely on specialized night vision goggles which can be affixed to a standard-issued flight helmet. These goggles have the ability to intensify images, enabling pilots to see even when the only available light is starlight. With superior Night Ops training, and advanced night vision equipment, the American GI is giving the enemies of freedom something to fear from out of the darkness.
