San Francisco enjoyed a bucolic ambiance in its early days. From the discovery of its magnificent bay through the founding of the Presidio in 1776 and up until the Gold Rush, San Francisco led a quiet existence. Just two years prior to the mad rush for gold, San Francisco was still an auspicious village with less than 500 residents. The Spanish and Mexican explorers, governors and army commandments who pioneered what would ultimately become one of America’s finest cities could not anticipate the gold fever which would take the city by storm. But by December of 1849, Gold Rush fever jettisoned the population to nearly 30,000 and the City by the Bay was officially on its way.
