In the year 745 of the 41st millennium the alien forces of the Tyranids invaded the home worlds of the Ultramarines Space Marine chapter. Brother Meridicus of the Second Company fought in countless desperate battles against the alien warriors of the Tyranids and the insidious hive mind that controlled them. Most notable was the defense of his companies shrine deep inside the Fortress of Ascidia. The bipedal alien warriors were unstoppable, climbing over the bodies of their fallen to scale the Fortress walls. Meridicus’ squad were part of a rear guard defense that withdrew deep into the Fortress compound and back towards the Companies shrine. The bursts of bolter fire and the screams of death the only sounds as each fallen Ultramarine enacted a heavy toll on the enemy. Determined to die to the last man in defense of their shrine, Meridicus and his remaining battle brothers barred the chapel doors and stood their ground. The final assault was intense and the Ultramarines were all but overwhelmed. But, just as soon as it had begun the battle was over, the Tyranid forces withdrawing! The roar of Thunderhawk Gunships overhead signaled the arrival of reinforcements and much needed air support. The Tyranid Hive Mind had collapsed and the chapel had been saved.
