Mario was created by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and is arguably the most recognizable videogame character in the world. He has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Though originally seen only in platforming games, currently Mario can be found in racing, puzzle, role-playing, fighting, sports, and many other contests. He first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong as a character named "Jumpman." The game was surprisingly successful, and Mario was later paired with his brother Luigi in another arcade game entitled Mario Bros. When the Nintendo Entertainment System was released, a game entitledSuper Mario Bros. was simultaneously released with Mario as the main character.
