Initially one of only twelve Constitution-class heavy cruisers constructed by Starfleet, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 went on to become one of the Federation's most celebrated and iconic starships. Five different captains were given command of the Enterprise during her decades of service: Robert April, Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk, Willard Decker, and Spock. Although each of these men had notable careers in Starfleet, it was under the command of Captain (and later Admiral) Kirk that the U.S.S. Enterprise became legendary.
James Tiberius Kirk's five-year mission was marked with significant milestones in the history of the United Federation of Planets. Kirk and his crew were the first Starfleet officers to encounter the Romulans in a century after the Earth/Romulan war that led to the founding of the Federation. When the Organian Peace Treaty with the Klingons was signed, it was Kirk and the Enterprise who were in the middle of it. Kirk and the Enterprise crew also made first contact with such alien races as the Gorn, the Metrons, the Horta, the Kelvins, the Melkotians, the Vians, and the Excalbians.
On more than one occasion, Kirk and his crew saved entire planets, star systems, and even the Federation itself from threats ranging from a rogue asteroid to a deadly planet-devouring doomsday weapon, from a giant space amoeba to the opening of a doorway into an antimatter universe that could annihilate our own. Along the way, the Enterprise was used to test the first multitronic computer unit to be installed on a starship, ventured beyond the edge of the Milky Way galaxy, and even discovered a way to utilize a warp slingshot around a star to travel through time itself.
Through these and other incredible achievements, James T. Kirk and his crew ensured that history would never forget the name, Enterprise.
