Who else is excited for the upcoming Star Wars Rebels series? A new short was released online today. The Machine in the Ghost gives us a three minute glimpse of what the new series will feel like.
This short features the rebels’ Ghost starship in the midst of an attack by a wave of TIE fighters. Hera, Kanan, and droid Chopper must work together to shoot down the TIEs. Hera pilots the craft, Kanan controls the guns, and the astromech droid is sent to repair the shields, communication controls, and finally take out the last remaining TIE fighter. Hera and Kanan’s interactions harken back to the Han and Leia snarkfest of the original Star wars films. Chopper has a personality akin to R2-D2’s, acting more like the crew’s child than a droid.Lighthearted in the midst of battle, the Ghost’s crew comes across as an early model for the Millenium Falcon’s crew.
Star Wars Rebels has the look of the Clone Wars animated series and the heart of the original Star Wars films. Rebels is set five years prior to the events of Episode IV A New Hope, between Episodes III and IV. Rebels introduces the origins of the Rebel Alliance as the Empire torments the galaxy.
This short comes on the heels of an extended preview for the upcoming series scheduled to premiere in October 2014. Star Wars Rebels is slated for a one hour special telecast on Disney Channel, followed by a series on Disney XD.
Rebels features the voice talents of Taylor Gray as protagonist Ezra Bridger, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Jedi Kana Jarrus, Vanessa Marshall as pilot Hera Syndulla, and James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Billy Dee Williams reprises his role as Lando Calrissian.
