While many have speculated on whether Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will appear in the upcoming Shazam movie, today it is finally official that he will star in the Warner Bros.-New Line Cinema superhero film adaptation! However, he will not be playing the infamous Shazam; rather, he will play Black Adam, Shazam’s enemy! According to Johnson’s tweet sent out this morning, the role will be portrayed as an anti-hero rather than a villain. It will be interesting to see what Johnson does with the part, as nowadays Black Adam is a more complex character to tackle than he was in the comics.

Black AdamConsidering the rising popularity of superhero movies worldwide, and with Dwayne Johnson bringing his own star brand to the film project, we predict Shazam is about to become a huge success with an already big boost.

Variety’s Justin Kroll reports that screenwriter Darren Lemke – who penned the scripts for Shrek Forever After and Jack the Giant Slayer, and is penning the upcoming Goosebumps movie – will be writing the screenplay for the Shazam movie. With the New 52 approach to the characters, we predict Kroll will have a lot of inspiration to draw from.

It is in fact possible that the Shazam movie project is actually more of a Black Adam project, focusing instead on Black Adam and his attempts to take power from Shazam. While unlikely, it would definitely be a twist on the traditional “good guy” story arc if the screenplay goes in this direction.

So, what do you think of the whole Shazam project? Who do you expect will play Shazam himself? Sound off in the comments below!
