It’s Wednesday! You know what that means? It’s American Horror Story day!
With Twisty, Dandy, and a whole host of so-called “freaks” making grand appearances, this season has been a scintillating display of vocal performances, anatomical curiosities, and thrill factors. Season four has certainly been encaptivating – if not entirely riveting – given the surprise appearance of fan favorite “Pepper” in the premiere episode of Freak Show. Let’s break out in the Name Game dance, friends, because this cameo means that every season of American Horror Story is connected!
This is the first time American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed what fans have been theorizing for years. Since American Horror Story is a series which reboots itself each season, it is quite a nod to the fans to introduce a recurring character across the interconnected seasons. Not only is Pepper of Asylum stepping into the pin-top world of Freak Show, but so is Sister Mary Eunice, the possessed nun from season two. Considering a hefty difference in the timeline, I doubt we’d see anyone from season one in Freak Show – that being said, I theorize that we’ll see some family relationships between the worlds. We never did find out who Tate’s father is, after all…
In an interview with EW, Murphy teases the relationship between the different universes of AHS:
This is the first year where we begin to tell you that season two is connected to season four which is connected to season one. People have started to write articles about that. A lot of their hypotheses have been completely right on. That’s the fun of the show. Hopefully by the end of the run, be it 10 years or 15 years, people will be able to stand back and be able to say, “Oh that was connected to x.
They’re all connected. We’re just beginning to tell you how they’re connected. They’re all very separate but there’s clues every season that we’re now telling you how the different worlds are intertwined.
Part of the fun of the show is the Rubik’s cube design of it, but, yes, there are purposeful connections, character connections, and similarities and things that connect that we’ll continue to connect moving forward.
As Murphy confirms that the top hat coffee cups featured in Freak Show are a “big season five clue”, many wonder what’s in store for our favorite characters in this complex interconnected universe of horror.
