What Do Wonder Woman, Game of Thrones, and Breaking Bad Have in Common?

No need to fear, fans, Diana of Themyscira and her Amazons are officially in good hands! Today Michelle MacLaren, the director of many exhilarating episodes of Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad has officially signed on to direct WB’s upcoming Wonder Woman film. Warner Brothers said from the start that the director for this film had to be a woman and thank goodness they held true to that statement.

Okay, this is huge news. MacLaren will be the first female director of a superhero film – and not just any superhero film – this is about the queen of female superheroes. While MacLaren may not be a household name yet, once you hear her credits, you won’t have any worries.

Primarily known in television, she won two Primetime Emmys for a little show you might know as Breaking Bad. She’s also directed, executive produced, and written for shows including The X-Files, The Leftovers, and The Walking Dead. Remember Brienne’s epic fight with a bear in the Game of Thrones episode, “The Bear and the Maiden Fair”? You have MacLaren to thank. She also directed “Second Sons”, “Oathkeeper”, and “First of His Name” from the epic medieval fantasy series.

What is telling, and most exciting, about those Game of Thrones episodes is her ability to not only direct action sequences, but female characters. Whether it’s Brienne of Tarth, Daenarys Targaryen (a lot of her episodes take place across the Narrow Sea), Cersei Lannister, or Sansa Stark, MacLaren has a proven track record of providing female characters the recognition they deserve. It’s about time we got some strong female vision on the superhero playing field.

After Lexi Alexander turned down the opportunity to direct Wonder Woman, fans weren’t sure where to look. We all kept our fingers crossed that Warner Brothers would still keep their female director promise. Luckily MacLaren stepped up to the plate and suddenly the film is more exciting than ever.
