Did Our Potential Captain Marvel Turn Down Marvel Twice Before?

Captain Marvel may be farther away than some of Marvel’s upcoming films, but it doesn’t stop us from being excited about it. A lot of names have been tossed around for Captain Marvel and many fans still hope for the titular character to be played by Katee Sackhoff. However, it turns out one name rumored as attached to the project, Emily Blunt, has been courted by Marvel before.

She first turned down the role of Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff, due to a contractual obligation with the 20th Century Fox film Gulliver’s Travels. I love Scarlett Johansson in the role but I have a feeling Blunt would have done extremely with the ex-KGB and current S.H.I.E.L.D. agent role, had she not been attached to another project.

The second role she turned down was Peggy Carter. Again, I love who they ended up casting in the role and I’m looking forward to seeing Hayley Atwell explore her character more with the premiere of Agent Carter on Sunday but I have no doubt Blunt would have done well with this role too. I can see her more in a Black Widow type role rather than Peggy Carter, but she proves herself as a versatile actress in every role, so I wonder if there’s anything Blunt can’t do.

On why she turned down the two roles, she told Vulture:

“It was never the right time, really, and it just didn’t work out scheduling-wise with those two. It’s always a difficult thing to talk about, because it’s not fair to the actresses who ended up playing them, you know? It just wasn’t the right time.”

I appreciate her respect to Johansson and Atwell – both actresses have made wonderful additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

What this tells us, however, is that Marvel wants her and frankly, I can’t blame them. After her outstanding performance in Edge of Tomorrow, she can definitely handle an action lead. Plus her versatile repertoire shows that she can excel in practically any role.

Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first standalone female-led film, is the next logical offer for her, and both fans and the rumor-mill seem to know it. Unfortunately, we’re not sure if Marvel will confirm anything anytime soon.

“No one’s offered me that officially, so it’s… very unofficial. I think it’s fan-casting, which is always very nice. But nothing official has been offered, for sure. If I get it, thank Meryl [Streep] for it!”

I think Blunt would make a terrific Carol Danvers and even if this role isn’t meant for her, I’d be surprised if she never showed up in the MCU. My hope (and money) is on our future Captain Marvel.

Can you see Blunt as Black Widow or Peggy Carter? Do you think she’d make a good Captain Marvel? Let us know who you would cast her as in the comments!
