Because everything looks pretty terrible for our heroes.
We’re less than four months away from Avengers: Age of Ultron and while that seems like forever, Marvel provides for us with a new trailer which you can watch below.
The new trailer uses “I’ve Got No Strings” from Pinocchio again, but this time without lyrics. Frankly, as much as it can be parodied, it’s once again the most effective part of the trailer. It gets your attention and terrifies you.
The other stand-out of this new trailer is, again, James Spader as Ultron. It may just be his voice, but Ultron is already shaping up to be one of the best villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s refreshing, given that villains have been one of the biggest complaints of this universe. Just in the trailer, Spader brings a chilling gravitas to his vocal performance of Ultron which makes us very excited to see what he’ll do with a whole movie.
When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
The trailer answers some questions (or at least hints about them) in regards to the official synopsis, but it also raises several too. We know that Avengers Tower now houses our heroes, including Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). While the synopsis pinpoints Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) as the creator of Ultron, earlier rumors of Bruce working with him seem to be confirmed here when he sees Ultron arrive during the party scene and says in a hushed tone to Tony: “Ultron.”
It also looks like we’ll be getting backstory for Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), which fans speculated about in the first trailer after seeing a shot of ballerinas.
In this new trailer, we see her being pushed down onto what looks like a medical table, which makes us think we might be seeing some of her time in Russia and the Red Room Academy where she became the Black Widow. But sorry, Marvel, we still want a full-length solo film for Black Widow.
None of our heroes are doing well, but Tony seems to be doing the worst. Everyone is blaming him because he created Ultron.
Still, while the trailer addresses some speculation, it raises a lot more. While the identity of the mystery woman in Avengers Tower during the party scene is largely believed to be Suzi Endo (played by Claudia Kim, confirmed by Disney), a scientist with Stark Industries who has connections to Ultron in the comics, a new mystery woman has popped up in this trailer.
We only see one shot of her, taking off a robe in a cave, and there’s no telling who she could be. Our bet, however, is that she’s a Wakandan and is going to help set up the introduction of Black Panther (who will be in Captain America: Civil War and headlining his own film in 2017).
There are more shots of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Quicksilver (Aaron Johnson), and Andy Serkis, but nothing notable. There’s still no sign of Vision (Paul Bettany).
Clearly, there’s a lot to speculate about, but that’s always the best parts of these movies.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olson, Aaron Johnson, Cobie Smulders, Paul Bettany, and James Spader. It’s set to hit theaters on May 1st.
