“It’s Morphin’ Time!”

It’s been a while since we last heard news on the upcoming Power Rangers movie, set to open in the summer of 2016, but now we’ve got something good for you.

Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver, a.k.a. the Green Ranger, on multiple iterations of the show, confirmed that the movie is going ahead as scheduled – and that he expects to be involved.

“We’re definitely not in a holding pattern. The movie is definitely set for this year. Everything is in place. They won’t give me specific details because it’s all like hush-hush. Even me, I try. I email Saban and ask them kind of what you’re asking me, but they do feel that I’m going to be part of it, because they feel there’s no movie, at least, without me. The funny thing is, one way or another, whether it happens or it doesn’t, I’ve been great to Lionsgate and I’ve been loyal to Saban. It’s not like they owe me, but if I want to ask for a personal favor, I’ve invested into their emotional bank account. I feel like it’s fair to have that withdrawal with them, because I’ve done nothing but support them for the last 10 years, 20 years in fact.So when that happens, I don’t need to cash in any favors. I believe it’s going to happen anyway, but when it does, I’ll keep my fans involved, but I will tell you it is being filmed this year. I know that for a fact. It’s going to be great when it is.”

You might not agree that there will be no movie “without him,” but it does make sense to include an original cast member, especially one who’s been so heavily involved in the franchise. Maybe the Green Ranger will even pass the torch to the new Rangers.

We’ll see that torch-passing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while other upcoming movies like Jurassic World and Terminator Genisys rely heavily on nostalgia. It’s a good way to draw in old fans while ushering in new ones.

Furthermore, while Roberto Orci may have stepped down as producer some time ago, he did say that the reboot has a “continuity within the world” and Tommy would help support that claim.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) are penning the script but there’s no other information about the film, including director or cast. Given that it’s set to begin production this year, we expect we’ll be finding out that information soon (fingers crossed!).

Power Rangers is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2016.

Are you excited for the film? How do you feel about Jason David Frank reprising his role as Tommy for it? Let us know in the comments!
