Step Aside Superman, We Have Our Supergirl

Superman isn’t the only hero from Krypton who’s going to save the day.

CBS’s Supergirl series, which started development last year, officially has its lead.

Melissa Benoist (Glee) will be playing Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, the cousin of Superman. She escaped from Krypton during its destruction and landed on Earth where she has since lived, hiding her powers. The show sees our heroine at age 24 and decided to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she truly is.

The hour long pilot was written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. Berlanti is also producer for Arrow and The Flash on CBS’s sister network The CW. While previous rumors of a Supergirl cross-over with Arrow and The Flash have been dismissed, it’s not a stretch to predict that Supergirl will be similar in aesthetic and tone to both shows (although probably closer to The Flash than Arrow).

Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment Chairman, is excited about the show and describes Supergirl as: “a very strong, independent young woman. She’s coming into her own. She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”

That sounds great to us, and we hope we see all of that in Benoist’s performance come September.

You can judge for yourself how they might be doing with the character so far with dialogue from audition tapes that hit the internet yesterday. There were three scenes leaked – read them on the following pages! Let us know what you think of Benoist as Supergirl and the leaked dialogue in the comments below!
