AMC’s The Walking Dead returns this Sunday after a shocking, violent, and senseless midseason finale. To get you ready for the show’s return, AMC released a clip of the first two minutes from the new episode – watch it below!

The tone and visuals of the clip are striking. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen from this show before. The trauma and shock our characters are feeling after Beth’s horrible death is palpable. There is a burial scene, presumably for Beth, and the music of the clip is somber.
The clip is harried by frantic jump cuts and there’s glaring overexposure throughout. It’s a sophisticated technical process, there’s no doubt about that. It might seem strange to see on this show, but it’s clearly a parallel for its characters and I also wonder if it’s something the show will continue to explore.
The second half of Season 5 has a lot to explore in terms of characters and themes. Hopefully it will do that, rather than continuing to rely on needless shock because as of late the show has felt hollow.
