Neil Blomkamp and Ellen Ripley Is a Duo We Can Get Behind

Earlier this year we got a taste of Neil Blomkamp possibly taking on an exciting project when he posted personal concept art for a secret Aliens movie he may or may not have been working on.

Now, after a few different interviews, it looks like he still might actually do it. About the concept art, he told Superhero Hype:

“Fox didn’t know that I was developing it, so in that sense, it was completely unsanctioned and just basically for fun. To me, it wasn’t for fun. To me, that was what I wanted to do next, and I spent a lot of time doing it, and there was a lot of effort that went into.”

Sigourney Weaver, who played Ripley in the Alien films, co-starred in Blomkamp’s Chappie and that apparently proved a lot of inspiration for him:

“[Sigourney] knows about it and part of it was just inspired by speaking to her on set when we were filming Chappie, and getting her thoughts on Alien and what she thought of the movies that came after Aliens and what she felt about Ripley and what was incomplete for her about Ripley. There was so much fuel in what she was telling me.”

He also stated that he did a lot more artwork than what he released, as well as some writing. He certainly seems serious and passionate about the film. In fact, the only person stopping this film from going ahead is Blomkamp himself.

In an interview with Uproxx, he stated that 20th Century Fox would make it tomorrow and he just has “to mentally agree with that.”

I can’t say I blame him. The Alien franchise is big, the fans are serious, and Hollywood can be a scary playground. Still, he’s proven himself a talented director, both visually and with storytelling, and fans took well to the concept art he released, so I can only hope that he does come to mentally agree with doing an Alien sequel.

Neil Blomkamp is arguably one of the best science-fiction directors of our time. District 9 is still one of the most impressive original science-fiction films of the past several decades and while Elysium wasn’t as strong, it still showcased his strong directorial skills. His next film, Chappie, is coming out next month and looks promising.

Would you like to see another Alien film and do you like the idea of Neil Blomkamp directing it? Let us know in the comments!
