Neil Blomkamp Is Officially the 9th Passenger Aboard the Nostromo

It was only last week that we reported director Neil Blomkamp was seriously considering directing an Alien sequel.

He stated that he was the only one holding himself back from taking on this project. Well, it seems he’s come to terms with it now if his latest Instagram post is anything to go by:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

Blonkamp himself was coy with the caption but 20th Century Fox confirmed the news. The studio also clarified that this will be a sequel to Alien and not the sequel to Prometheus that’s set to come out on March 4, 2016.

This bodes well for Sigourney Weaver to return as Ellen Ripley, particularly after working together on Chappie. Both Blonkamp and Weaver have been positive about this sequel in interviews.

There’s no telling what’s in store for Blomkamp’s take on the franchise but, given what we’ve seen from him in the past (and how excited we are for Chappie), we’re hopeful. He’s a very talented director, especially in the field of science-fiction.

You can check out Chappie when it comes out on March 6th in anticipation. It stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver, and, of course, Sharlto Copley as Chappie.

What do you think of Neil Blomkamp taking on Alien? Are you excited to see Ripley potentially return? Share your thoughts in the comments!
