Draco Malfoy Is Taking Us Back to Hogwarts

If there’s a fandom that will probably never die, it’s the Harry Potter fandom. While the seven epic books and its eight movies may be in the past, there’s still Pottermore, a spin-off film in the works, conventions, fan meet-ups, and more! If you thought this magical franchise were nearing its end, you’re quite mistaken.

Actor Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the movies, is currently working with the BBC to produce a documentary on Harry Potter and its fan culture.

It will be one hour long and air on the BBC before being released online (yay!). It will include interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and J.K. Rowling as well as countless fans, collectors, and cosplayers. Harry Potter fans are dedicated and passionate, so this should be fun.

According to the report, this will be “a road trip journey” narrated by Felton. As for Felton, he describes it as an “in depth look at the world of super fans and these people that have followed franchises.”

This isn’t the first documentary to be made about a fandom. There’s Trekkies, The People vs. George Lucas, Comic-Con IV: A Fan’s Hope, and more. The risk that these films run is exploiting fans and making fun of them. Some cross that line, others don’t.

We’re hoping that this documentary will be the latter, and with the involvement of creators and fans alike, we have a feeling it’ll be a genuine, heartfelt journey. After all, Felton himself is a fan:

As for the documentary, he says: “It was a massive insight for me, going behind the ropes and seeing what people actually do to stand behind a railing at an event. You don’t really think about the three hours it took them to stand there and get the best spot.”

The documentary is set to air in April.

What do you think about this documentary? Are you excited to revisit the world of Harry Potter? Let us know in the comments!
