Sand Snakes Are the New Fiercest Warriors in Game of Thrones

The fifth season of Game of Thrones is almost upon us and HBO is ramping up the excitement! They recently released a new featurette, showcasing Tommy Dunne, the weapons masters of the show, and the weapons he’s created for the new Dornish characters we’ll be meeting in Season 5. Watch the featurette below!

We got our first introduction to Dorne last season, with Oberyn Martell and Ellaria Sand. Now the show will actually travel to Dorne, where we expect the story will diverge from the books.

In this video, Dunne focuses on the weapons of the Sand Snakes and Areo Hotah.

The Sand Snakes are Oberyn’s bastard daughters (as you remember, they are less strict about relationships in Dorne than in King’s Landing) and they aren’t happy with their father’s murder. Based on this video, which attributes daggers to Tyene, a whip to Nymeria, and a spear to Obara, it seems the weapons have been switched around from the books. Curious indeed.

The weapons themselves, however, are stunning. Intricately detailed, Dunne has done an excellent job of incorporating snakes into each weapon in creative and unique ways.

We also get a better look at the Sand Snakes themselves, who are some of the fiercest warriors in all of Westeros. I can’t wait for them to join the show (they’re some of the best characters in the books, in my humble opinion), but that nipple-armor is still rather unfortunate, bringing back some terrible Batman memories. Michele Clapton, the costume designer for the show, did comment on it, however: “I didn’t notice them when I was there. And sometimes you can’t go back and change things… It was a bad move.”

Just don’t think that poorly designed armor will stop these ladies from putting you in your place.

Areo Hotah, the right-hand man of Doran Martell, the prince of Dorne and Oberyn’s older brother, wields an incredible longaxe (although it looks a little more like a glaive or a spear).

Not to mention the process of making these weapons is fascinating. Dunne explains how he had to show these specific weapons before actually making them, which he doesn’t have to do for every weapon.

Game of Thrones Season 5 premieres April 12 on HBO. Don’t forget to check out the first featurette of Season 5: A Day In the Life!
