Just because Spider-Man is officially part of the Disney/Marvel family doesn’t mean he’s left Sony Pictures entirely.
The web crawler will next appear in a live-action Marvel film before getting his own solo film, co-produced by Marvel and Sony, but that’s not the only solo film he’ll be receiving.
Today at CinemaCon, Sony Pictures officially announced that Spidey will be getting a solo animated film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller! That’s right, the directors of The LEGO Movie and both 21 Jump Street films will be helming Spider-Man in animated action.
Lord and Miller will write and produce the new film, which exists independently of the live-action films coming up for Spider-Man.
This is exciting news, because it brings Spider-Man back to creative roots and Lord and Miller have proven themselves talented directors. I would say it’s a fair bet that this animated film will have a lot of humor and wit that makes Spider-Man such a fan favorite hero.
While there are no plot details for this new film yet, there is a tentative release date: July 20, 2018.
