Another day, another new series for Marvel’s All-New All Different line. Following the announcement of Amadeus Cho as Hulk, we now know another new series that will be hitting stores.
Exclusively revealed by Mashable, Red Wolf, Marvel’s first Native American hero, will be getting his own series come December.
We knew the hero would be returning thanks to teaser posters Marvel released back in June, but we didn’t know in what context.
The character, who first appeared in 1970 as William Talltrees in Avengers #80, hasn’t had his own solo run since 1976. He first came back to the comics sphere this year with 1872, an alt-universe Western run where Steve Rogers is a sheriff.
The new series will be written by Nathan Edmondson (who most recently has taken on Punisher and Black Widow) with art by Dalibor Talajić and Jeffrey Veregge, who’s of Suquamish and Duwamish decent himself.
It will take place in the American Southwest as a “gritty, brutal crime series.” Mashable describes him as “being to New Mexico what Daredevil is to Hell’s Kitchen.”
Veregge expressed the excitement of bringing Red Wolf into the fold:
“There’s not a character like Red Wolf out there right now. As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero.”
He comes from the 1872 universe but will exist within the mainline universe that was created out of Secret Wars. The team is looking to reinvent him in authentic ways, which is why it’s so exciting to have Veregge consulting and doing art for the series.
Overall, expect for a rough-riding good time, according to Edmonson:
“Above all, he’s resourceful. He’s kind of in a sense the Jason Bourne of the West, who can find a way out of any situation, or a way to use the resources of whatever room or position he may be in — he’s not a gunslinger, but he might use a gun if he has to. But beyond all that, he’s just a brawling, tough-as-nails fighter.”
Sounds like a good time to me!
Red Wolf will hit shelves in December.
