The dawn of the monsters is about to begin. Warner Bros’ massive success with last year’s Godzilla and the fan-favorite Pacific Rim in 2013, with sequels planned for both, is only set to get bigger.
According to Deadline, Thomas Tull is moving his upcoming movie Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros.
This might seem like an odd move at first, given Legendary Pictures, who’s behind Kong, signed an agreement with Universal in 2014 to have all their films distributed by them for the next five years.
So why the sudden change? Well, when you remember WB has Godzilla, you might get excited…
Yup, a clash of monsters is potentially in the works! Mike Fleming, Jr. of Deadline explains:
“In what would be a pretty epic pairing, the Godzilla sequel that is in the works will be followed by a movie that pits the giant ape versus the giant fire breathing reptile. I’m told this is happening very quickly with moves going all the way to Japan, where Godzilla rights holder Toho is based.”
There’s no knowing how Universal will fit into this if all the pieces fall into place, but it does make sense to have the two franchises under one roof if they want to develop crossovers. (Seriously, pay attention Disney, Marvel, and Fox.)
This wouldn’t be the first time the two monsters met on-screen. The 1962 movie King Kong vs. Godzilla pitted them against each other.
Kong: Skull Island is set for a March 10, 2017 release. It’s being directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, and Toby Kebbell starring.
Godzilla 2 is set to hit theaters on June 8, 2018 with Gareth Edwards directing again. No cast is confirmed.
