Production on Pacific Rim 2 Has Stopped Indefinitely, No Thanks to Hollywood

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim may not have made a lot of money domestically, but it was a hit internationally and it also boasts a strong and vocal fan base (which I enthusiastically include myself in). Those last two things were enough to greenlight a sequel, which was announced last year.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, production has since “been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).”

Why? Well, because of that pesky Godzilla vs King Kong idea and Thomas Tull causing some tension over at Universal Studios by moving Kong: Skull Island to Warner Bros. after an agreement that Universal would distribute Legendary Pictures films (which Tull is Chairman of) for the next five years.

One of those other Legendary films is Pacific Rim and its sequel.

This is not the first time Universal has pulled out of a del Toro directed Legendary film. His newest film, Crimson Peak, which will be released on October 16th, lost the financial backing of Universal when it moved ahead with an R rating.

An interesting article in Forbes notes that production might have also been halted because Universal has so many hits right now (Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2, Minions, Furious 7) and they don’t need to take a risk with Pacific Rim 2.

To which I shake my first furiously and say: isn’t that the perfect time for money-obsessed Hollywood to take risks?

It’d be the same general reason why Disney pulled the plug on Tron 3.

Maybe if Crimson Peak makes enough money, Pacific Rim 2 can get back on its feet.

This is really disheartening news – I’m a big fan of Pacific Rim. It’s a wonderful film that includes epic action and an all-inclusive world that at its core is about humanity and coming together. I just hope the sequel is still able to happen.

Do you still want Pacific Rim 2 to happen? Let us know what you think of all this in the comments!
