Godzilla vs. King Kong Officially Set for Release in 2020

Just a month ago, Deadline reported that Thomas Tull transferred his upcoming movie, Kong: Skull Island, from Universal to Warner Bros. in order to have a mash-up movie with Godzilla.

Well guess what? It’s true!

Legendary Pictures released a press release today detailing the plans for these two franchises:

The initial trio of films are 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND, GODZILLA 2 in 2018 and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th.

So we have another outing for King Kong (last seen in Peter Jackson’s epic, although this one has no relation) in 2017, Godzilla in 2018, and then they’ll clash in 2020.

It will be interesting to learn the story of how the clash comes about, given both monsters’ different relationships with humans and also their different motives.

(And hopefully that gap in 2019 is for Pacific Rim 2. Come on, Legendary, you can do it!)

Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Tom Hiddleston, Sam Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Toby Kebbell is set to hit theaters on March 10, 2017.

Godzilla 2 is scheduled for release on June 8, 2018. It will be directed once more by Gareth Edwards.

Are you excited to see a clash of monsters on the big screen? How do you hope it happens? Let us know your ideas in the comments!
