5 Theories from the New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Poster and Teasers

By now you’ve all seen the poster and teaser videos for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, right? RIGHT? Whew, that’s what I thought. You scared me for a minute there.

Like you, I’ve been obsessively looking at these since they first dropped yesterday. This has led me to completely over-analyze them and develop some theories.

First up, the poster:

1) The position of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) cannot be a coincidence. Her staff runs parallel to his lightsaber, making it seem like she could be the one wielding the blade just as much as him. It definitely supports the idea that Kylo and Rey are related and the movie universe version of Jacen and Jaina Solo (Han and Leia’s twin children from the no longer canon books).

Does this mean Rey has the potential to be dark? Or that she’s Force-sensitive? Are both she and Finn (John Boyega) Force-sensitive or is Finn wielding the lightsaber a red herring? Whatever it turns out to be, it’s pretty clear that Kylo and Rey are connected in some way.

2) As many fans have noticed, Luke (Mark Hamill) isn’t on the poster. I think it’s a pretty easy explanation of Luke being missing or in hiding in the film, and this poster simply reflects that.

What I think is far more interesting is the particular push of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in this film’s marketing. He’s the only one of the original trio that we’ve seen full-on in a trailer and he was on the poster that came out of D23 Expo. I hate to be the one to say it, but I’m a little worried about Han’s future. Of course, this could also just mean he’ll have the biggest role out of the trio for this film.

3) Well, helloooooooo, Death Star 3.0! Curious that its position on the poster is that of the light side, though… Could it be more than what it seems? Does it actually belong to the Resistance?

Now let’s move on to the teasers, which are snippets of the full-length trailer set to hit tonight.

4) Check out Finn and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) in that first video!

Based on interviews, we know their journeys become intertwined. We also know that Leia (Carrie Fisher) sends Poe on a mission. Could that mission be to find her daughter, Rey, on Jakku, where we also know Finn ends up?

There’s no knowing when this scene takes place, but it could be after they first initially meet and Finn’s now joined the Resistance. He looks particularly serious as Poe claps him on the back – is this right before a big battle?

5) Now we know what Rey was looking up at in the Instagram teaser video from a couple months ago – screaming First Order ships as they fly over her!

The forest planet she’s on looks similar to the planet Finn and Poe are on in the first clip, and she has Poe’s astromech droid, BB-8. Does this take place at the same time and they’ve been separated?

Man, I’m excited for the full-length trailer tonight! Speaking of, it’s set to air during Monday Night Football on ESPN.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, and Max von Sydow is set to come out on December 18, 2015.
