Star Wars: The Force Awakens So Big It Earns a Last-Minute Critics’ Choice Best Picture Nod

Usually when award show nominations come out, that’s that. We complain about the picks that were snubbed, and celebrate the surprise inclusions. It doesn’t often happen that a movie can be so big it’s retroactively added after the fact.

But then Star Wars: The Force Awakens happened.

The Critics’ Choice Awards nominations were announced on December 14, before Star Wars came out. When the film was such a massive success, the association asked its members to vote on whether or not the film would have made their top 10 had it been released earlier.

And it looks like the answer was yes, because The Force Awakens was added as the 11th Best Picture nod for the show! It joins the following movies:

The Big Short
Bridge of Spies

Brooklyn

Carol

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian

The Revenant

Room

Sicario

Spotlight

It’s unlikely it will actually win, but it’s exciting that it was included at all. Hollywood, especially recently, has a habit of looking down on blockbusters when it comes to award season. It didn’t always used to be this way, and seeing movies like this and Mad Max get nominated is promising (and hopefully not a fluke).

This isn’t an indication of whether or not these films will get an Oscar nod, but we can hope!

Not to mention Star Wars’ inclusion will probably help ratings.

The 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards will air on January 17 on A&E.

What do you think about Star Wars’ last-minute inclusion? Sound off in the comments!
