Japan to Re-Release Original Pokemon Card Set for 20th Anniversary

In October 1996, the Pokémon Trading Card Game was first published in Japan. I’m gonna let that sink in. The game you loved so much growing up, when you had binders full of trading cards, will turn twenty next year.

Appropriately, Japan is celebrating in a big way – by re-releasing the first set of cards on February 27.

Get ready to say hello again to Pikachu, Arcanine, Jynx, Magikarp, and more, because this is “the original base set in its first reprinting in years.”

The re-release will include 60 cards, a player’s manual, and a coin. The cards will feature identical artwork to their original publication in 1996.

The Pokémon Company will also be releasing Pokémon Red, Blue, Green and Yellow with special-edition 2DS systems and while none of these commemorative releases have dates for arriving over here, gamers can at least download the Virtual Console anniversary titles on February 27 as well.

Are you excited for Pokémon’s 20th anniversary? What’s your favorite card in the original set? Let us know below!
