Wonder Woman Film Casts Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and Hero’s Mother

The upcoming Wonder Woman film has officially cast Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and Wonder Woman’s mother, and it’s not Nicole Kidman.

It was scheduling conflicts that forced Kidman to pass on the role, and so the studio turned to Connie Nielsen, who will now be playing the powerful and high-ranking Amazon.

Hippolyta was created by the five Goddesses who formed the Amazons – Hestia, Aphrodite, Demeter, Athena and Artemis – and is a crucial figure in Princess Diana’s life.

According to Variety, rumor had it that when Kidman passed on the role, the studio was going to re-write Robin Wright’s role as Diana’s aunt to that of Hippolyta. But clearly, they did not go that route.

I’m very excited for the film to not only explore its World War I setting, but that of Paradise Island as well. To see multiple Amazon warriors is going to be thrilling, especially depending on how much Greek Mythology they throw in to the film as well.

Nielsen has most recently been seen in The Good Wife and The Following, though she is perhaps most well-known for her appearance in Gladiator.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis. It’s set to arrive on June 23, 2017.

Do you think Connie Nielsen is a good pick for Hippolyta? Which other Amazons would you want to see?
