First Official Trailer for The BFG Teases the Magic of Spielberg and Disney

British author Roald Dahl’s children’s stories have been ripe for film adaptations since 1971’s Willy Wonk & the Chocolate Factory. We’ve seen beloved adaptations of Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and more.

Now, Disney’s at it again, this time with director Steven Spielberg at the helm, with a new film adaptation of The BFG.

The official trailer was released yesterday, so have a look:

There has been some scrutiny over the trailer (the CGI and dark-lit scenes, mainly), but if there’s one thing I’m always willing to keep an open mind for, it’s the awe and wonder of Spielberg films.

He doesn’t always have hits on his hands, but there’s no denying that Spielberg is a master of his craft, and when everything comes together, it’s magic. Hopefully this will be a case of that.

There are plenty of discussions about trailers right now – whether or not they give too much away, whether they accurately represent the film, how they’re edited, etc. – but the fact of the matter is that they are a part of movie culture, and can be done well or not.. I think there is more good than bad in this trailer, even if it’s not put together in its best form, and I’m looking forward to checking out the film!

The BFG stars Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Penelope Wilton, and Ruby Barnhill. It’s set to hit theaters on July 1, 2016.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you looking forward to this film? Are you a Roald Dahl fan? Sound off below!
