It’s not so much a question of whether or not we’ll be getting a live-action Pokémon film, but rather which studio will make it.
Hollywood has been courted for some time by The Pokémon Company to make a film, and now there’s an auction going on between three major studios to get the rights: Warner Bros., Sony, and Legendary.
While Warner Bros. and Sony were the initial frontrunners, Legendary Pictures has recently started to pull ahead.
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of this entire situation is that, since January, Legendary is a Chinese-owned studio, and the idea of them taking on a beloved Japanese franchise could be a compelling development.
To Legendary’s credit, they’ve already brought Godzilla to the big screen in partnership with WB with the 2014 film named after the titular monster. This was also done alongside Japan’s Toho Co. Ltd.
Regardless of who gets it, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing our first live-action (presumably combined with CGI) Pokémon film on the big screen.
