Hollywood has yet to truly crack the code regarding the X-Men.
In director Bryan Singer’s franchise (which is comprised of two phases at this point), they’ve gotten closest with X2: X-Men United and X-Men: First Class, one of which wasn’t even directed by Singer.
Bombastic and largely over-serious, the X-Men films for the most part aren’t actually bad by any stretch of the imagination, they also just haven’t been as great as their potential promises.
The final trailer for the latest mutant film, X-Men: Apocalypse, was released this morning and it looks like the most bombastic and over-serious iteration yet. But also there’s something in it that seems to promise dumb fun, too, and perhaps finally the deliverance this franchise has needed.
There’s nothing new in the way of plot with this trailer, but there’s an onslaught of footage, some of which looks wearisome, some of which looks like great, fun spectacle. Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, the “star” of this current X-Men phase, steps up the plate, ready to lead Xavier’s (James McAvoy) new students against Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).
Plus: there’s explicit confirmation of the father-son relationship between Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), as well as a brief glimpse of a fan-favorite mutant at the end of the trailer.
This could be Singer’s last directorial outing with this franchise and if so, hopefully he goes out with a bang, paving the way for Hollywood to try again with some of Marvel’s biggest and best heroes.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit theaters on May 27, 2016, directed by Bryan Singer, and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, Olivia Munn, and Oscar Isaac.
