Tetris Movie Trilogy in Development for Whatever Reason

Did we learn anything from Pixels? It doesn’t seem like it, if the existence of The Angry Birds Movie and this newly announced film is anything to go by.

According to a new report, a movie based on the video game Tetris is currently in development as a China-U.S. co-production under Threshold Global Studios with an $80 million budget.

I’m honestly still trying to wrap my head around it, but there are more details if you’re so inclined.

The film will start shooting in 2017 in China and other locations, “with the Chinese cast featured in the ensemble pic that’s billed as a sci-fi thriller.” So, aliens? And we combat them with falling bricks?

Producer Larry Kasanoff explained this film will be the first installment in a trilogy and that it’s “not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise.”

I’m typically not cynical when it comes to movies and trying new things and taking risks, but a trilogy seems excessive. Who knows? Maybe this film will push the boundaries of film technology and blow us away, but this is a rare moment where I’m leaning more towards skepticism. If anything, the existence of a film doesn’t mean I need to see it so as long as it’s largely inoffensive, I’ll probably just remain ambivalent.

What are your thoughts on Tetris: The Movie? Are you interested in a trilogy about multi-colored and multi-shaped falling bricks? Let us know below!
