Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda Confirmed for Mary Poppins Returns

I have not kept my support for both Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s possible casting in Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins sequel a secret.

So when they were officially announced yesterday – with an official title and release date, to boot! – I was excited, to say the least.

Certainly many people are going to ponder whether or not a sequel to Mary Poppins is necessary, but the fact of the matter is that it is happening and Blunt has the cheeky, endearing appeal to handle the inevitable comparisons to Julie Andrews – to say nothing of the world’s universal love for Miranda.

Titled Mary Poppins Returns, the film will follow a grown-up Jane and Michael Banks in Depression-era London after they suffer a personal loss. Their childhood nanny, Mary Poppins (Blunt), returns with lamplighter Jack (Miranda) to bring the magic and joy back into their lives.

Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods) is set to direct, with David Magee writing the screenplay based on P.L. Travers’ The Mary Poppins Stories. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be writing all new songs, with Shaiman also producing the new score.

The original Mary Poppins won five Oscars, including Julie Andrews for Best Actress and the Sherman brothers for Best Original Score and Song. Could we be in for the same type of successful magic this time? Find out when Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters on December 25, 2018.
