Fast 8 is getting some royal attention with the addition of the latest cast member, Helen Mirren. Back in March of 2015, when Furious 7 was in theaters, Helen Mirren mentioned her admiration of the movie series in an interview with Yahoo! Movies. She mentioned, casually, it seemed, that she would be open to starring in a future installment of the film franchise, as long as she got to drive.
What seemed like a joke must have been taken very seriously by The Rock and friends, because what Dame Mirren wants, Dame Mirren gets.
This rather unexpected announcement from the legendary actress of stage and screen has been met with much celebration around the web. Her body of work certainly suggests that she is capable of kicking ass, if that’s what the role requires. Her impressive CV finds her taking on Shakespearean heroines to rich governesses to secret agents.
As the Fast and the Furious franchise has progressed, it has become more and more polished. While, at heart, it is still the mindless action series that it started out as, it has evolved into something more. The first film has a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score, while the seventh film has an 81%. With the additional star power of Dame Mirren, the eighth film may head north of 90. We will keep you updated, should further information be released about her upcoming role.
Fast 8 is set to arrive in theaters on April 14, 2017. It’s directed by F. Gary gray and stars Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson.
