When your job becomes saving the galaxy, it’s easy to give in to some sass every once and a while. Or, perhaps more than that if you’ve got a special penchant for snark. The heroes of the Star Wars universe had such penchant. These characters trained many of us, including myself, the finer details of the art of sassiness. They even illustrated that sometimes it takes no words to convey your whip-like smarts.
Han Solo
It’s hard to rank them, but let’s start with Han Solo. Being the scruffy looking nerf herder that he is, sass is basically all that he’s made up of. Snark is easier than emotions, you see. So is running, but that’s a rant for another time. From the moment we meet the smuggler, we are met with constant quips and biting wit. His few moments of sincerity are typically when himself or when someone he (begrudgingly) loves is in mortal peril.
Princess Leia Organa
Every scoundrel with wit needs an equally clever woman to banter with, so next up is Leia Organa. Being raised as a princess didn’t stop Leia from picking up the finer points of being cheeky. In fact, it seems to have only sharpened the sassy bite of her words. Never once does she put up with Han’s, or anyone’s snark. The General of the Resistance may be more pensive now, but she can dish out every bit of what she can take.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Young Obi-Wan Kenobi may seem like a weird addition to this list, but I firmly believe that’s only because most of us avoid the prequels whenever possible. If you take a look at them, and shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, you can see that Master Kenobi schools Anakin every moment he can, and I’m not just talking about in the art of being a Jedi.
Chewbacca and R2-D2
Leaving out Chewbacca and R2 would be gross negligence on my part. These two characters have spread their sass across the galaxy without ever uttering a single word. It’s impossible to blame them though. Chewie’s spent a long time dealing with Han’s shenanigans, and R2 has dealt with everything from Anakin Skywalker to Yoda. With their growls and beeps, these two companions can keep up with the sassiest of ‘em.
They may be scruffy lookin’, walking carpets, beaten down droids, “disgraced” Jedi, and occasionally stuck up princesses, but the sass, snark, and wit that these characters bring add a levity sorely needed to a galaxy that seems to be in constant peril.
