Lionsgate Revealed Power Rangers Teaser Trailer at New York Comic Con

Its not quite “Morphin’ Time”!

Today, Lionsgate and Saban released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers remake and it looks to take the Super Sentai-based franchise in a completely new direction.

Gone is the silly, light-hearted nature of the TV series. The reboot instead goes for a more serious, gritty tone. Creating a film that is a cross between Breakfast Club (more on that later), Twilight, and Chronicle.

The trailer (below) provides more insight into the plot of the new film. It starts with star athlete Jason (Dacre Montgomery) getting in trouble for what seems to be a car accident and being forced into a Breakfast Club-type scenario. Like most teen flicks he becomes fast friends with the other stereotypical characters that are serving detention alongside him. The whole club is there: Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (RJ Cyler), Zack (Ludi Lyn), and Trini (Becky G.).

Shenanigans ensue and the team stumbles upon different colored power coins/morphers. From something out of a superhero origin story, each member of the team gets absurd superpowers. Elizabeth Banks shows up as Rita Repulsa to threaten the Rangers. And the teaser ends with the team in the command center where we get to see them partially morph into their suits.

Here is the full synopsis:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

We still have plenty to look forward to. We haven’t seen Rita’s henchman Goldar or the movie incarnation of Zordon (Bryan Cranston) and his sidekick Alpha 5 (Bill Hader). And who can forget the Zords! We haven’t seen them in action yet. How will they play into the plot?

Power Rangers is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
