How to Shop for the Special Collector in Your Life

Looking for a thoughtful gift for the collector in your life? While shopping for collector toys and action figures can be fun, it can also be intimidating if you don’t know where to start. The good news? This helpful primer will lead you in the right direction.

When it comes to action figures, toys, and collectibles, there are a variety of different types of collectors. Here is a breakdown of four of the main types of collectors to help you narrow your search for the perfect gift.

Mint in Box Collector

Toys in their original packaging abound in his living room. He doesn’t play with the action figures but keeps them on display in the original boxes. Sound familiar? You’ve got a mint in box collector! An action figure or toy in “mint in box,” it’s the original collector toy in its original packaging. Both the item and the box it comes in are originals, in mint condition, and treasured by the collector.

Loose Collector

If your collector’s bookshelf or desk features a bunch of action figures, bobbleheads, or toys that are displayed without packages, they might be a loose collector. A loose collector is more concerned with finding an original toy in good condition than they are with the toy’s packaging and accessories. You don’t have to worry as much about the packaging but you should what accessories come with the item. For some older items, you can find them available out of the package and usually shipped in new packaging.

Fandom Theme Collector

Is he obsessed with Star Wars toys and only Star Wars toys? Then he’s a fandom theme collector, which means he collects toys based on a theme they love most. These collectors are easy to shop for because you can browse a store based on the theme to find something they don’t have yet or really want. Besides Star Wars, other popular fandom themes include Marvel, DC, Batman, and Star Trek.

Loyal Customer Collector

While you might not notice a theme on the surface, if he only owns Funko toys, there’s your clue: A major toy brand is what this collector is passionate about. Some other big collector toy brands include Hasbro, Kidrobot, and Kotobukiya.
