Geek Headlines: Venom Begins Production, Krampus Christmas, and More

The week has come to a close. It’s finally the weekend, but not just any weekend, for most, it’s Christmas weekend. And while we drop almost everything for this holiday, the entertainment world stops for no one! Let’s look at this week’s biggest pop culture headlines and releases before go offline and celebrate the holidays.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Dominates Box Office

It’s been a pretty quiet week on the news front. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still churning out tickets at the box office as it topped nearly $500 million domestically and has done quite well critically. Fans seem fairly divided on this movie but that seems to be the natural reaction to almost every popular franchise coming out these days. Love it or hate it, people are still seeing the movie. The movie took risks and went in a direction that no other Star Wars film had done, and in director Rian Johnson’s own words, “it had to happen eventually.”

Upcoming Super Hero Movies and TV

Sony’s next Spider-Man universe film comes in the form of Venom starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. Production has begun, which means photos and videos from the set will begin leaking. Set to be released October 5, 2018, Hardy is joined by Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. The film will (allegedly) not be part of the MCU and may never include Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Next year DC and Warner Bros. will launch their own subscriber network. One of their featured shows for this network is Titans. Based on DC Comics Teen Titans, the show will feature Robin leading a group of super hero teens fighting bad guys much the same as their Justice League mentors. Last month, we got our first look at Brenton Thwaites as Robin/Dick Grayson and now we get a look at the costumes for Hawk and Dove played by Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly, respectively. Both will be recurring characters in the first season with the possibility of becoming regulars in future seasons.
