How a Toy Made “The Man”: The Becky Lynch Story

In the long history of the WWE, there have only been a handful of Superstars that reach the echelon of global icons. Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and John Cena might be the names that come to mind. But the newest Superstar to join the rank is none other than “The Man,” herself. That’s right, the face of WWE is Becky Lynch (real name Rebecca Quin). She is arguably the biggest star in the industry and demands adoration from the WWE Universe. How she got to this point, might surprise you.

The Toy That Inspired the Rise

WWE

The Women’s Revolution, a movement that began when the fans demanded that WWE would “give Divas a chance,” was the beginning of Becky Lynch’s evolution to be the top star. Back in 2015, NXT stars Paige, Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and, of course, Becky Lynch were brought to RAW to turn the tide of the Women’s Revolution within the WWE. It was their time in the industry to shine and show what they can do in the ring. The spotlight on the main stage brought great opportunities, including more merchandise.

During a Mattel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, a new line of WWE figures was announced. When the team from Mattel revealed a line of dolls based on the WrestleMania 32 match between Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch – they left Becky completely out! Something which annoyed Becky, as she mentioned in her recent WWE 24 episode, and made her work even harder to become the Superstar she knew she could be.

You Are What You Eat

After this incident, Becky still felt overlooked, she was frustrated. So, Becky took matters into her own hands. She started taking more chances and went with her gut. Her gut led her to quinoa. That’s right, quinoa. Becky became a social media sensation with a promo that she cut about quinoa she was eating backstage. And the WWE Universe ate it up.

Pop Culture Inspires Everyone

WWE

Becky Lynch had found a new attitude. One that was built out of, not only, her frustration, but her drive and having the opportunity to speak her truth. This enamored her with the WWE Universe.

The thing that some fans didn’t know was that Becky’s new persona was partially inspired by Kill Bill character “The Bride” (played by Uma Thurman). Becky’s ring gear took hints from The Bride’s leather motorcycle jacket and pants. It was at this point that she began calling herself  “The Man” and the world took notice. In the run-up to WrestleMania 35, Becky’s heated Twitter exchanges with Ronda Rousey made her must-see in and out of the ring.

Earned and Not Given

WWE

Wrestlemania. “The Grandest Stage of Them All.” The biggest event of the year for WWE Superstars and fans alike. To main event this show is to say that you’re the best in the company. Some wrestlers are given that spotlight. But there’s a handful of wrestlers that earn the main event match. Becky’s drive and the fans made the main event of Wrestlemania 35 happen.

This was the very first Wrestlemania main event to be headlined by women. She’d share the stage with Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey but she stole the show and both of the company’s Women’s Championships. Then “The Man” became “Becky Two Belts.”

But that’s not all, Becky Lynch has become the face of the WWE by being the first WWE Superstar to grace the front cover of ESPN The Magazine alongside Netflix’s GLOW’s Alison Brie. This past year, she’s broken all the norms within the WWE.

SDCC Déjà Vu?

WWE

So here it is, July 2019, and Becky will appear at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con WWE Mattel panel. Over the last few years, Funko has released a couple of Becky Lynch Pop!s, and there have been several Mattel action figures. There should definitely be more merchandise and we hope that toy companies have learned from past mistakes. With fingers crossed, we look forward to several new dolls, figures, statues, and all kinds of collectibles inspired by “The Man,” because her tremendous journey is nowhere near finished.
