UPDATE 10/8: The Martian’s Naomi Scott has official been cast as the Pink Ranger!
It’s been quite some time since we last heard any news of the upcoming Power Rangers movie, but that changes today.
The film is no longer set to come out in 2016, but at the very start of 2017 on January 13th (against Guy Ritchie’s re-telling of King Arthur) and it also has a director: Dean Israelite (Project Almanac).
According to Variety, there is now also a shortlist for the main cast.
Testing for Jason (the Red Ranger) are KJ Apa (Shortland Street), Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) and Mitchell Hope (The Descendants). Jason is the leader of the Power Rangers (at least until Tommy Oliver comes in to the fold).
Next is Zack (the Black Ranger) and sources say Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life) and Brian ‘Sene’ Marc (Major Crimes) are testing.
Lastly, Naomi Scott (The Martian) and Stefanie Scott (Insidious: Chapter 3) are testing for Kimberley (the Pink Ranger).
The story about high school students who are infused with powers and aided by giant mechanical vehicles known as Zords to save the world first became a phenomenon in the United States in 1993. It ran for three years and has since spawned films and several other spin-off series.
Power Rangers is set to debut on January 13, 2017.
