Watch the Trailer for the New Animated Spider-Man Film

Many Spider-Man fans were happy to see the newest version of their hero (as played by Tom Holland) make his first (if brief) appearance in the Marvel universe in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. That was followed up with his own film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, which came out in July of this year and was produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, who were responsible for the first Spidey film starring Toby Maguire, and directed by Sam Raimi.

Now an animated version of Spider-Man, from Sony Pictures, is in the works. Set in a world separate from the Avengers Marvel universe films, the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released at this month’s BrazilCon by the film’s creators, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, directors of the animated films, The Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, as well as the 21 and 22 Jump Street movies.

This version of the Spider-Man story gives us a new hero. In fact, as the trailer shows, Peter Parker is dead, as indicated by the new Spidey stopping at his grave. We get to see the new Spider-Man using his webs to fly through the city, until the end when he pulls off his mask, showing the new face of the web-slinger: Miles Morales, originally introduced in August 2011 in Ultimate Fallout, #4; he’s a boy who, like Peter, was bitten by a radioactive spider.  But the trailer teases us with the tagline: “Enter a universe where more than one wears the mask.” And, in fact, the very last scene of the trailer shows Miles talking to what appears to be another, older Spider-Man, and asking, “Wait. So how many of us are there?”

How many, indeed. Intrigued? Find out when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is released Christmas of 2018.
