When it comes to big screen adaptations of popular video games, things have always been a bit less hit, a lot more miss (see: Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and — going much further back — Super Mario Bros.).
Will Assassin’s Creed be that rare beast: a well-done adaptation that fans and non-fans alike can enjoy?
The jury’s officially out until December 21st, when the film hits theaters, but until then the latest featurette has given us a better glimpse into the plot and characters.
There’s no questioning that the cast is an impressive one. Genre favorite and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender stars as the lead (Callum Lynch in the present, and Assassin Aguilar in 15th century Spain), with Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Charlotte Rampling rounding out the rest of the heroes and villains.
The framework of the plot does allow for both historical action pieces and semi-futuristic sci-fi fights, with fancy technology, weaponry, and nifty costumes galore. If nothing else, Assassin’s Creed should at least be visually exciting.
Here’s hoping the story, characters, and performances are equally entertaining.
