Season 4 Character Spotlight

Mikasa Ackerman: A Heroine’s Journey in the Final Episodes

In anime, Mikasa is one of the most interesting female characters around. Her emotional complexity makes her really one of anime’s most interesting characters.  Throughout the entire run of Attack on Titan, Mikasa Ackerman shows herself to be incredibly loyal and giving, often protecting following alone with Eren Yaeger. While this is one of her best traits, it’s also seen as a hindrance, often seen as a dependence that Mikasa has on Eren. Mikasa’s ability in these final episodes to do what needs to be done, and kill Eren in his human form, completes her character growth. By severing her ties to Eren, and finally freeing the world of the Titans, she also helps accomplish Eren’s own goal.

Mikasa’s story is interested as well because it ultimately mirrors Ymir Fritz’. To love someone so deeply, that the abusive aspects of the relationship are pushed to the side and ignored. When Mikasa kills Eren, she not only frees herself, but she also frees Ymir. Mikasa’s final moments tie the entire story together. Mikasa’s story with Eren ends here, but it’s revealed that she lives a long, healthy, and happy life.

Specifically, Mikasa’s role in the last battle with the titans was incredibly important. She severed Eren’s human head right off his body, and afterwards, her and Armin take his head from the battle grounds in order to give Eren a proper burial. Mikasa’s final moments are of love and peace.

Eren Yeager

Eren Yeager is our protagonist-turned-antagonist. For a while, Eren was the good guy, wanting to take down the Titans, alongside the rest of our main characters. But now, at the end of the series, Eren was decisively against the world. During the final battle, Eren took the form of the Attack Titan, though smaller than it had been in the past. Eren’s final moments on their Earth took a turn for the worst… but if you take Mikasa’s view point, he is reincarnated as a beautiful bird, peaceful.

Armin Arlert

In chapter 1 of this finale, Armin’s role was imperative. After attempting to transform into the Colossus Titan, Armin is swallowed up, where he ends up in the Paths Dimension. After having a heart-to-heart with Zeke, they both return, Zeke then summoning the power of the deceased Titan spirits to help fight against Eren. Armin and Zeke are then freed. Armin attempts to finish the job and sets off a gigantic bomb. Doesn’t work. When Eren emerges again (as the smaller Attack Titan), him and Armin battle it out one-on-one! Mikasa does her job, slices off Eren’s head, and the ties to the Titan’s crumble, ending the Rumbling.

Levi Ackerman

Levi, “Humanity’s Strongest Soldier”, has a tough go of things during these last episodes. After Zeke transforms his fellow soldiers into Titans, Levi is able to capture Zeke. Although… things don’t quite go as planned when the Thunder Spear that Levi had placed in Zeke’s stomach to keep him still, is purposefully pulled. This results in a terrible explosion that knocks Levi unconscious and almost kills him. After being pulled from the dust, Levi barely makes it to the final showdown – but his greatest act comes when he Zeke emerges from the spine of Eren’s titan. Levi launches into action and decapitates him. Years later, Levi is wheelchair bound but happy, giving sweets to children that stop by.

Mikasa Ackerman

Like we spoke about earlier, Mikasa’s main point during this battle is that it HAS to be her who takes down Eren and saves humanity from the Titans. When Mikasa and Levi get dropped off to fight Eren, Mikasa is the one who intuitively knows that Eren’s human form would be inside the mouth of his Titan. Mikasa launches herself through an opening, and swiftly decapitates Eren, ending the Power of the Titans.

Reiner Braun

Reiner Braun spends a lot of the final episodes in his Titan form, first working to attack Eren, but then handing that job over to Armin. Reiner, Annie, and Pieck use their Titan forms to hold back the terrible Titan centipede. Since they were pre-occupied, the three are quickly overpowered by the impending Titan army. The day is saved for Reiner when Eren is officially killed, the Power of the Titan’s eliminated from the world.

Connie Springer

Connie is present for the entirety of the War for Paradis. Near the end, Connie pairs with Mikasa to try to save Armin. While they (and Annie) head off, they pretty quickly become overwhelmed defending themselves. All hope seems lost until Berthold’s Titan begins fighting on their side. Connie is able to free Armin when the Okapi-like Titan attempts to grab him again. Connie returns to Fort Salta and is forcibly turned into a Titan when the centipede begins spreading its Titan-turning-fog.

Jean Kirstein

Jean enters the battle after he escapes from his prison cell in the Shiganshina District. Something notable: while he was in jail, he learns from Armin that Eren had verbally attacked Mikasa. Jean says that he doesn’t believe Eren would do that without an ulterior motive. Jean becomes part of Levi’s crew, in charge of stopping Eren. Jean is also one of the members pulled into the Paths Dimension, where Eren explains what he is doing and why, but erases their memories of the conversation afterwards, only allowing his friends to remember once he is dead.

Hange Zoë

Hange Zoë was the one who found Levi after he was burned so badly from the explosion that he was almost unrecognizable. After jumping in a river with him to get him to safety, they come across the Cart Titan and a Marleyan soldier, who Hange is able to convince to join their forces. Hange then readies the flying ship, and him and some other soldiers lift off in an attempt to kill a few Titans on their way out. Hange names Armin the 15th Commander.

Annie Leonhart

Annie, the Female Titan, joins the battle after realizing she didn’t want to go with Hange on the flying ship. After learning that Armin had been captured by the Titans, she joins Levi and Mikasa on a mission to rescue him. Turning into the Female Titan, she helps Mikasa reach her goal, before she is taken to Fort Salta to reunite with her father. But (just like we saw with Pieck) the centipede arrives to ruin the reunion. As her father transforms, Annie works with Pieck and Reiner to stop the centipede.

Historia Reiss

Historia is pregnant during this time, and it is believed by one of the characters that this was so she wouldn’t inherit the Beast Titan before Zeke had time to meet up with Eren. After the Rumbling has ended, Historia uses her power to protect the families of those who had lost their lives fighting Eren. In the future, Historia marries her child’s father, and lives a peaceful life.

Nile Dok

Nile is one of the military men who was turned into a Titan by the Zeke’s tainted wine. Once transformed, Nile begins to attack to Braus family, only to be killed by Gabi.

Theo Magath

In his final moments, Theo is enraged at what his soldiers have been through, and what the world has come to. While offered a spot on Hange’s flying ship, the General decides to stay behind to destroy a Jaegerist ship so they wouldn’t be followed. A few enemies end up spotting him and Keith Sadies saves the day. The two hole themselves in a shelter, before setting off a bomb and killing themselves along with many Jaegerist enemies.

Ymir

Ymir died when she was fed to Porco Galliard to pass along the Jaw Titan. However, when Eren calls upon her in the Path Dimension to help his fight, she takes control of her Titan, and ends up fighting against Eren and his defending Titans. She saves Reiner from being destroyed by the War Hammer Titan and continues to fight until the Rumbling ends.

Bertolt Hoover

Bertoldt Hoover died when he was eaten by Armin, in an attempt to pass along the Colossus Titan. But during this final battle, Bertoldt is also brought back by Eren. Armin acknowledges that he killed him to take his Titan, and Bertoltd seemingly joins his side. Bertoltd immediately starts protecting Annie, and from then on fights against Eren.

Floch Forster

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Floch’s belief in Eren’s plan was the only thing he truly fought for. Floch was the one who wanted to kill Levi when he found him after the explosion, but protecting Zeke and getting him to Eren was more important and left the opening for Hange to get him to safety. After multiple near-death experiences, Floch is brought down by Gabi, after an attempt to bring down Hange’s ship. Floch’s last words were to please stop fighting Eren, as it was Paradis’ last chance for survival.

Dot Pixis

After consuming the wine that contained Zeke’s spinal fluid, Dot became one of the pure Titans that began attacking our team. Sadly, Dot was killed by Armin.

Kiyomi Azumabito

Kiyomi has a few notable moments in these final episodes. She has a heart-to-heart with Mikasa, explaining that she offers safety to her and in the future. Afterwards, she is captured by Floch and some Jaegerists. Mikasa breaks Kiyomi free and hides her and her companions in the basement. Kiyomi is then able to make it to the flying ship and escape. Years later, Kiyomi is seen again with Historia, awaiting ambassadors so they can begin peace talks.

Tom Xaver

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Tom Xaver returns to take over his Titan and help take down the Titans that were defending Eren. Xaver also helps Armin transform into the Colossus Titan.

Anka Rheinberger

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Sadly, not very many memorable moments for Anka during this time. Anka accompanies Pyxis to a meeting where they discuss what to do, and she is also shown looking confused after Zeke’s scream causes people around here to experience an electric shock (the one that will turn people into Pure Titans.)

Grisha Yeager

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Grisha was initially called back into his Titan form to help defend Eren on his mission. But Grisha is also able to gain control back, and he helps take down any Titans who are still defending Eren. He also helps Armin break free and transform, so that he may fight Eren himself.

Hitch Dreyse

Hitch’s big moment is deciding to help Annie escape the district, although this doesn’t go quite as planned for her, as Annie ends up leaving her for Armin and Connie. Hitch can be seen years later as one of the Jaegerists, excited for the new Paradis army.

Zeke Yeager

Zeke Yeager has been one of the biggest nuisances of this season. Zeke’s reveal as Eren’s half brother leads him to have an interesting relationship with Eren, believing that the return of the Titans was crucial. Eren and Zeke disagree and argue, but their work together is how Eren is able to make his master plan work. Zeke and Eren touching as Titan’s is what allows Eren to reach his prime form. Zeke’s most horrible act was probably adding his spinal fluid to the wine that many people drank, leading to them turning into Pure Titans.

Who are the new characters in AOT Season 4?

Porco Galliard

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Porco Galliard is also a new character this season, one of the Marleyan’s who attains his Titan when Ymir is captured and given to him to eat. Galliard fights in the main battle and eventually regains control of this Titan from Zeke. Galliard then helps save Jean and Pieck. From then on, he works to destroy Eren.

Pieck Finger

Attack on Titan Pieck Finger Plush

Attack on Titan Pieck Finger Plush

Pieck is the Cart Titan that agrees to help Hange. Pieck is obviously very helpful during the battle, revealing that the Cart Titan can transform many times, over and over again. This is incredibly helpful as the enemy Titans continue to entrap the team. Pieck was also present at Fort Salta when the centipede released it’s Titan-transforming-gas. Pieck hops onto to Falco to escape and spends the rest of the battle attempting to stop the centipede from returning to Eren.

Falco Grice

After escaping the centipede’s Titan attack on Fort Salta, Falco is able to provide one more flight. He flies Mikasa and Levi to Eren’s Titan where they work together to take Eren down. 3 years after the insane battle, Falco and Gabi can be seen planting trees in an effort to restore the Earth.

Gabi Braun

Credit: Attack on Titan Wiki

Gabi Braun, another soldier working towards the end of the Titans, escapes turning into a Titan herself, having avoided the wine that Zeke had spiked with his own spinal fluid. After saving Falco from his jail cell, and after he learns that he can fly in his Titan form, she and Annie hop on Falco’s back and make it just in time to save Mikasa, Reiner, and more from the impending doom of the Titan army. Sadly, Gabi isn’t able to escape the Titan curse for long. After returning to Fort Salta, the terrible centipede (the source of the Titans) makes its way into the fort and changes everyone inside into a Titan, all hellbent on protecting the centipede as it makes its way back to Eren. Only Falco, both Ackermans, and Pieck escape.

The Final Attack on Titan Episodes Unveiled

Analyzing the Culmination: Season 4’s Final Episodes

In these final moments, the entire battle comes to a head! Armin is almost able to end the war by setting off an explosion to kill Eren, one that everyone believes will do the trick. While our characters exit the area, it is revealed that Eren survived the blast, and that Mikasa had to be the one to take him down. Mikasa finds an opening in the Titan’s mouth and instinctively knows that the human Eren must be in there. Once in, she quickly does what she has to, decapitating Eren once and for all. Eren’s head is held in her hands, and Mikasa and Armin exit the scene so that she can give him a proper burial. Ymir, the founder of the Titan curse, sees Mikasa’s sacrifice and ends the reign of the Titans. Years later, the peace of the nation has been restored, as the different governments join together to negotiate during peaceful times. Mikasa rests under a tree when a bird joins her, helping to tighten her loosened scarf. Mikasa takes this to mean that Eren’s presence is with her, always.

While that is the end of the entire series, it isn’t the true ending, as a certain clip plays during the ending credits that changes the meaning of the entire ending. Years into the future, after Paradis has regrown into a thriving city and eventually burned down by human warfare, a boy stumbles upon a particular tree… one that looks very familiar. Fans have speculated that the tree looks eerily similar to the one that Ymir found all those years ago, implying that the Titans may one day return. Humanity’s history is constantly and consistently repeating itself.

For a show who’s many season’s felt dark and pessimistic, Mikasa’s ending provided an ounce of hope – that peace and tranquility was possible. But from the looks of things, life is cyclical, and destruction always seems to lie around the bend.
