The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer dropped yesterday. I’m sure you’ve seen it already but you should probably go watch it again because I’m going to break down a few things we noticed in the trailer.
5. The Avengers Are Finding Time for Domesticity and Romance
There are several shots of the team in what looks like a cozy house so it looks like they find some time for some much needed R&R which, hey, if anyone deserves that, it’s this team! There might be some tension with Natasha telling the boys off (honestly she’s the true hero here) and Steve and Tony arguing outside their little cabin, but at least there’s also romance in the air.
Bruce and Natasha seem to be getting close at the one minute mark. This relationship development has been teased and hinted at before, so it’s not necessarily surprising but this is the most solid confirmation we’ve gotten so far.
This is probably the most intimate we’re going to see this team, which will be quite a change from the first Avengers film, but certainly not unwelcome. It’s not enough to see superheroes fighting alongside each other, I want to see their personal relationships with each other too. It’s the more rewarding aspect to getting tons of superheroes in one film.
However, Chris Hemsworth should watch out because we all remember what happened last time he went to a cabin in the woods with Joss Whedon…
4. Ultron No Longer Wants You to Think He’s Pinocchio
This is the first Age of Ultron trailer we’ve seen without “I’ve Got No Strings” from Disney’s Pinocchio. I was personally a big fan of that song being incorporated into the trailers, because it gave a haunting sense of mystery and dread. It really added to the eerie horror of Ultron’s character.
Yet while we didn’t learn anything new in this trailer (a lot about the plot has already been said in interviews), this was the most plot-driven trailer so it makes sense that they’d step away from mystery (and ruining our childhoods) to focus more on how the film is going to look, feel, and sound when we see it in theaters.
Plus I doubt that “I’ve Got No Strings” is actually going to show up in the final film anyway.
3. Thor Will Help Introduce the Wakandans
In the second trailer, we saw a brief shot of a woman disrobing in a cave with a small pool of water. In this trailer, we see the scene of Thor bursting out of water in what looks like a dark environment.
T’Challa (Black Panther) is set to make his debut in Captain America: Civil War and our bet is that we’ll first be introduced to the Wakanda, the nation that he’s part of, in Age of Ultron and that Thor will have a big part in it.
2. Ultron Has Weird Ideas of Peace and Likes to Get Troubled Teens on His Side
This is the best look at Ultron we’ve seen thus far, as well as twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. As this trailer explains, Tony created the Ultron Program (with help from Bruce) as a peace program. But, as a lot of movies go with artificial intelligence, Ultron turns on humanity and his creators.
Wanda and Pietro, as Elizabeth Olsen has explained before, have a grudge against the Avengers for some reason and team up with Ultron. We don’t imagine this will last because Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (the superhero identities of Wanda and Pietro) become two of the most prominent Avengers in the comics.
They’re definitely a force to be reckoned with. In this trailer we see Quicksilver punching Captain America (with help from his super speed) and Wanda using her powers to possess Natasha. I have a feeling Wanda could be behind that Hulk and Hulkbuster fight, as well.
1. Does Vision Have an Infinity Stone?
We finally got our first look at Paul Bettany’s Vision at the very end of the trailer. It’s only his face, but that can say a lot.
One of the most interesting things we noticed is the yellow gem in his forehead – could it be an Infinity Stone or is it simply the gem in his forehead from the comics which can create solar energy beams? It looks an awful lot like the yellow stone in the Infinity Gauntlet that we saw Thanos wearing but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything since the yellow gem on Vision’s forehead has been there all along.
However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has already diverged from comics canon with regards to the Infinity Stones, as well with Vision’s character, so perhaps it’s both. It’s no coincidence that Vision is being played by Paul Bettany, the voice of JARVIS, after all. In the comics, he’s a completely separate character who has a romantic relationship with Wanda.
I personally think it’s just the yellow gem Vision already has in his forehead and not an Infinity Stone but come May, I could be proven wrong.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon, stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen. It’s set to come out on May 1, 2015.
