Star Wars may not be real but it’s always exciting when elements of it become reality. Boeing has patented technology that sounds like it came straight out of a galaxy far, far away.
In science-fiction, force fields can be used as protection devices and that’s just what Boeing has created. Named the “Method and system for shockwave attenuation via electromagnetic arc“, this technology will use energy to deflect potential damage.
While it won’t be able to prevent direct impact, it will protect targets from damaging effects of shockwaves. You can watch a video below that explains this further.
Theoretically, a sensor will detect an explosion and send a message to an arc generator that will then produce a plasma field, using lasers, electricity and microwaves, between the target and shockwave.
The plasma field cannot be held for any period of time but it’s certainly a step in an exciting direction. Science is constantly moving and creating, so who knows what we could see next?
What do you think of this patent? How do you feel about technology from Star Wars or Star Trek becoming real? Sound off in the comments!
